The popular notion when it comes to being eco-friendly, or even if you’re trying to live a sustainable life, is that you have to punish yourself a fair amount to achieve it. This isn’t true, because if it was, I wouldn’t be trying to do this.
Living a sustainable life doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself in the least – it simply means that you’ve to make slightly different choices and do the best that you can to reduce your personal contribution to pollution. There are no hard and fast rules that you absolutely must carpool or absolutely must become vegan. It’s just about doing the best that you humanly can.
Take for instance, the shampoo that you use – most shampoos contain harmful chemicals like parabens and sulfates which, when let into the sea, are capable of destroying marine life, and the truth is that it isn’t the best for your hair either. Add to this the fact that most popular, and large manufacturers of personal care products don’t generally adopt sustainable practices, and that the plastic packaging generates tons in waste.

What is the solution here? To abandon shampoo altogether? Well, for the sake of your hair (especially if you’re living in a hot, sticky place like Chennai), and for the sake of those living with you, I would say no. The answer is to find shampoo that has been manufactured locally, using sustainable practices, and is free of these chemicals. The good old Shikakai Podi and Vaasanai Podi that our grandmothers used to make were the original eco-friendly shampoos! But there are plenty of alternatives out there, plenty of brands which make it a point to advertise their herbal ingredients, their recycled packaging, etc so you’re really spoiled for choice.
When it comes to being eco-friendly, it’s just a matter of putting a few seconds of extra thoughts into your actions. Think about the plastic bottle that’ll be junked the next time you order a bottle of water at a café, and opt for regular water instead. Remember to take a bag with you the next time you go grocery shopping. Read labels on the products you buy with a little extra care. It doesn’t matter if you cannot do everything possible to be eco-friendly – I doubt it’s possible for anyone to be that way, but the idea is to whatever you can, whenever you can. Never accept the fact that your single contribution won’t make a difference – after all, it is the little drops of water, that come together to make an ocean.
